How It Works: Fat Freezing (Cryolipolysis)
Fat Reduction With Cryolipolysis
Section 1: Introduction & Goal
The Overall Goal
Cryolipolysis is your one-and-done style treatment designed to permanently reduce fat cells in specific, pinchable pockets like love handles and the lower belly. It’s targeted shaping, not overall weight loss.
Section 2: How It Works
How It Works
Short version first: Cryo cools fat cells enough to damage them, and your body gradually clears them over the following weeks.
- Selective freezing: fat cells crystallise at higher temperatures than surrounding tissue, so Cryo targets fat while skin and muscle are designed to stay safe when used correctly.
- Vacuum grip: the cup pulls the fat pocket into the applicator so cooling plates can chill the tissue evenly.
- Natural elimination: the body’s cleanup systems remove damaged fat cells slowly, which is why results take time.
(You’ll get the “how to do it” next, because that’s what matters for results.)
Section 3: What to Expect & Results
What to Expect
During the session: strong suction + intense cold for the first few minutes, then it goes numb and becomes easy.
Immediately after: the area will feel like a cold, firm “butter stick” when the cup comes off. That’s normal.
Result timeline:
- First visible changes: 3–4 weeks
- Best results: 12 weeks (3 months)
Normal vs Not Normal (Read this before you start)
Normal:
- Minutes 1–5: strong cold + tugging suction
- Minutes 5–10: numbness kicks in
- After removal: firm, cold “butter stick” feeling
- Numbness/tingles for a few days, sometimes up to 2 weeks
Not normal:
- Sharp pain that doesn’t settle after 10 minutes
- Blistering, grey/white patches, or severe skin discoloration
- Pain that worsens after the session instead of improving
Required Sessions & Frequency
Cryo isn’t a weekly treatment.
- Treat the same area once, then wait for results
- Full assessment at 12 weeks
- If you want a second round on the same spot, wait 4–8 weeks minimum
What It Should Feel Like (and Settings)
As you can imagine, you'll feel the cold and a lite suction from the vacuum.
First-session protocol (recommended)
- Start conservative: 5°C and Medium suction
- Choose one area and do a full cycle properly
- Only go colder if you’ve tolerated Cryo well before
Machine settings
Mode: Cryolipolysis / Fat Freezing
Temperature:
- Typical working range: 5°C to -10°C
- Start at 5°C if you’re new to get used to it.
- Go colder if you tolerate comfortably
Time:
- Most areas: 45–60 minutes per area
- Smaller areas: 35–45 minutes
- If doing both sides (love handles), plan extra time
Suction:
- Start at Medium/Half
- Lower if it feels too intense
- Tissue must be drawn fully into the cup for best results
Progress Tracking (this one needs patience)
- Take “before” photos from 3 angles (front + both sides)
- Measure weekly (waist/hip/thigh depending on area)
- Best check-in points: Week 4, Week 8, Week 12
- Don’t rely on the scale. Cryo is shape change.
Section 4: Application & Procedure
Before Starting / Preparation
What you need
- Correct cryo cup/handle attached
- Fresh antifreeze membrane (pre-soaked sheet)
- Towel (cleanup)
- Optional: skin marker (to mark the pocket)
- Water bottle (hydration helps comfort and recovery)
Skin prep (important)
- Skin must be clean and dry
- No oil or lotion before treatment
- Membrane must be laid flat with no folds or bubbles
Step-by-Step Procedure / Application
-
Find the pocket
Stand up and pinch the fat to find the centre of the bulge. Mark it if helpful. -
Apply the membrane
Lay the antifreeze membrane flat over the area. Smooth out bubbles/folds. -
Apply the cup
Place the cup firmly on top of the membrane. -
Start suction + check the seal
Ensure the fat bulge is fully drawn into the cup. If there are gaps, cooling won’t be effective. -
Stay still while it runs
If the seal breaks mid-cycle, you may need to restart. -
Finish + massage (this is the money part)
Remove cup and anti-freeze membrane. The area will be firm and cold. Massage firmly:
- Minimum: 2 minutes (non-negotiable)
- Aim: up to 5 minutes if you can tolerate it
This helps break up the frozen tissue and supports better results. You can also use the 40kHz cavitation handle at this point to help break up the fat.
Post-Treatment Care
- Mild redness, numbness, tingles, and tenderness are common
- Avoid hot baths/saunas and intense workouts for 24 hours if sensitive
- Drink plenty of water across the day
- Light movement is great (a walk is perfect)
Clean-Up (every time)
- Turn off the machine
- Dispose of the used membrane (do not reuse)
- Wipe cup/handle with a gentle disinfectant wipe
- Dry everything before storing
- Coil cables loosely and store clean and dry
Section 5: Safety & Candidates
Ideal Candidates
- You have a pinchable bulge that fills the cup well
- You’re near your goal weight and want to target stubborn pockets
- You’re patient enough to wait for results (up to 12 weeks)
Contraindications List (Do Not Use If)
Skip Cryolipolysis if:
- You’re pregnant
- You have broken/irritated skin in the area
- You’ve had very recent surgery in the area (not fully healed)
- You have known cold sensitivity conditions
- You have significant circulation issues in the area
- You cannot tolerate suction or bruise very easily
Specific Safety Warnings
- Never use Cryo without a fresh membrane. It’s safety gear.
- Make sure the cup seal is solid before the cycle runs.
- Don’t chase colder temperatures for ego. Comfort & consistency wins.
STOP IMMEDIATELY IF…
- Sharp pain continues beyond the first 10 minutes
- You see blistering, grey/white patches, or severe skin changes
- You feel faint, unwell, or the suction becomes unbearable
Stop the session, remove the cup safely, and contact FreezeDrop support if anything looks abnormal.
